On August 6, the second series of attacks began with the aim of returning two heights. At dawn, the Japanese military established that approximately 70 Soviet tanks had advanced towards Hill 29, and artillery positions had been built on both sides from Machine Gun Hill to Hill 29, and another 40 tanks were located on the south side of the line of hill ridges.Colonel Sato ordered at dawn a massive shelling of the vicinity of the 29th height, and from 6 in the morning a massive fire began on Soviet positions. In response, fire was also opened. The Japanese army used all the weapons available to them, including captured anti-aircraft artillery, which they successfully used against tanks. However, from 11 o'clock in the morning, the Red Army soldiers intensified their artillery fire, as a result of which many Japanese soldiers were wounded at the height of Machine Gun Hill. Also, from about 11:30, aircraft joined the fighting, which began to drop bombs in the area of the heights of Machine Gun Hill and Bezymyannaya. Almost immediately the advance of tanks and infantry began.

Major Hirahara, who guarded the area from heightsMachine-gun Gorka to the southern slope of Zaozernaya, having decided to eliminate the Soviet units, attacked the advancing tanks with the help of 3 rapid-fire cannons, immobilizing 14 of them. Each battalion used battalion and regimental guns, captured anti-aircraft artillery in battle. However, they could not completely stop the advance of the tanks, and, in the end, 22 tanks broke through to the northern slope of the Machine Gun Hill. Losing soldiers killed and wounded, the Japanese military, however, fired at the enemy with massive fire, and detachments of sappers, sacrificing themselves, rushed under tanks with explosives. The battle continued until sunset, and as a result, the advance of tanks and infantry slowed down. On Zaozernaya Night, two Soviet companies unexpectedly launched an assault on the Japanese positions on the summit and at 08:30 were able to invade the Japanese positions. The attack came as a surprise to Colonel Sato, but he quickly mobilized the main forces of the 1st Battalion to repulse it. On at the top, the Japanese military fought back, using hand grenades, throwing stones at the Red Army, and as a result were able to seize the initiative in battle. The next day, August 7, at about 6:00 am, the Soviet military were forced to retreat. However, the USSR sent reinforcements to its fighters, and this complicated the situation at the front for Japanese military.

On August 7, from about 5:30 am, the height of Machine Gun Hill, as well as the position of the 9th company (the junction of the heights of Zaozernaya and Machine-gun Gorka) were even more heavily fired upon by the Red Army, and the accuracy of the shots increased noticeably. From 11 o'clock fierce air attacks also began. Particularly strong attacks unfolded between 13:30 and 14:30, at which time the infantry, led by tanks, began to advance, and 4 tanks were able to break through to the Japanese positions. Major Hirahara, having ordered the sapper platoon to engage in hand-to-hand combat, personally led the 1st company, a platoon of battalion guns, one company of the 76th regiment, whose task was to attack the enemy, and at 15:00 the Japanese forces launched a counteroffensive. Leading the counterattack Major Hiraraha was mortally wounded in the heart.
