Emperor Jimmu, whose childhood name was Sanomaru, was born Koshihara in Sano, Takahara Town. , as an adult, moved to a residence near the current Miyazaki Shrine (Miyazaki City). After consulting with his older brother, Itsuse no Mikoto, he set out on his eastern voyage. In the early hours of August 1st on the lunar calendar, the cry of "Wake up, wake up" echoes through the town. The Okiyo Festival, which is said to recreate the morning of Emperor Jimmu's departure, conveys the memory of the legend of the eastern expedition. In April 1940, the Okiyo-maru was launched to commemorate the 2,600th anniversary of Emperor Jimmu's eastward voyage. It set sail for Osaka with a crew of 124. The 21m-long ship, equipped with 24 two-man oars and sails, was modeled after a boat-shaped haniwa (traditional Japanese figurines) excavated from the Saitobaru Burial Mounds.
