The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Officer Award /都民の警察官 , lit. Citizen's Policeman/ was established in 1952. The award is presented annually to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department police officers. A special committee selects outstanding police officers recommended by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. The award is sponsored by the Fujisankei Group, including Sankei Shimbun and Fuji Television Network, and supported by the Tokyo Metropolitan Association of Life Insurance Associations, Tokyo Metropolitan Traffic Safety Association, Tokyo Crime Prevention Association, Tokyo Metropolitan Police Forum, Tokyo Police Friendship Association, Tokyo Gas, Sankei Building, Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance Company, and Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings. It is the only privately run award system, and is considered an honor on par with the Superintendent General's Award and the Police Merit Medal.
