Reduced Orders of the White Eagle for Wearing Around the Neck or in the Medal Bar

Excerpt from Rules of Wearing.

"With the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky the breast star of the Order of the White Eagle with and without swords is not worn and the badge of this order with orders: a) St. Alexander Nevsky - worn around the neck on a narrow ribbon and is worn below the crosses of the Order of St. George 2nd and 3rd class and above the cross of St. Vladimir 2nd class and b) St. Andrew the First-Called - worn on the chest to the left of the Orders of St. George 4th class and St. Vladimir 4th class and the badge of the Order of the White Eagle must be the same size as the badges established for wearing on the chest.

Note. If the Order of the White Eagle is granted for a military feat, then its badge with swords is worn around the neck with a uniform; it is also worn around the neck with the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called and is worn below the cross of the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky and above the cross of the Order of St. Vladimir 2nd class.

With a frock coat only the badge of the Order of the White Eagle with swords is worn in the absence of badges of the orders: a) St. George 2nd and 3rd class; b) St. Andrew the First-Called with swords; c) St. Vladimir 1st class, with or without swords, and d) St. Alexander Nevsky with swords."

"При ордене Св.Александра Невского звезда ордена Белого Орла, с мечами и без мечей, не носится, а знак сего ордена при орденах: а) Св.Александра Невского надевается на шею, на узкой орденской ленте, и носится ниже крестов ордена Св.Георгия 2-й и 3-й ст. и выше креста Св.Владимира 2-й ст. и б) Св.Андрея Первозванного - надевается на груди, левее орденов Св.Георгия 4-й ст. и Св.Владимира 4-й ст., причем знак ордена Белого Орла должен быть по размерам одинаковой величины со знаками, установленными для ношения на груди.

Примечание. Если орден Белого Орла пожалован за военный подвиг, то знак его с мечами, при мундире и вицмундире, носится на шее и при ордене Св.Андрея Первозванного и надевается ниже креста ордена Св.Александра Невского (см. выше ст.4-я) и выше креста ордена Св.Владимира 2-й ст.

При сюртуке носится один только знак ордена Белого Орла с мечами, надеваемый на шею при неимении орденских знаков: а) Св.Георгия 2-й и 3-й ст.; б) Св.Андрея Первозванного с мечами; в) Св.Владимира 1-й ст., с мечами или без них, и г) Св.Александра Невского с мечами."

Descended from the Finnish nobles of the Tavastgus province Ivan Ivanovich Munch was born on January 18, 1795. Educated at the Imperial Alexander University in Helsingfors .

With the outbreak of 1812 War he joined the army and on October 10, 1812 was promoted to the first officer rank, served in the Life Guards Pavlovsky Regiment. He took part both in the expulsion of Napoleon 's troops from Russia and in the subsequent Foreign campaigns of 1813 and 1814 .

In 1828-1829 Munch in the rank of captain fought with the Turks on the Danube. In 1830 he received the rank of colonel.

On January 1, 1839, he was promoted to major general and on August 30 of the same year was appointed commander of the Life Guards of the Preobrazhensky Regiment. Since May 28, 1843 he served in the army without a position after which on November 11 he was appointed director of the Finnish Cadet Corps. On January 1, 1847 for an impeccable service of 25 years in officer ranks he was awarded the Order of St. George of the 4th degree. On April 11, 1848 he was promoted to lieutenant general.

On August 30, 1855 Munch was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Imperial Alexander University in Finland and served in this position for 10 years (1855-1865). On April 17, 1862 he received the rank of general of infantry and on October 10 of the same year he was awarded the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky .​

He died July 14, 1865.

Reduced White Eagle order from the collection of State Historical Museum in Moscow. Before 1905 breast star was in the collection of Pyotr Ivanovich Shchukin.

Original crown ring with maker's mark and hallmark was lost. Both rings behind eagles heads marked with partly visible maker's mark "KS" for Karl Shubert "Мастерская Карла Рейнгольда Шуберта/Workshop of Karl Reyngold Shubert".
