Toshimichi Uemura (上村利道; February 10, 1889 – September 19 , 1947) was born in Kumamoto Prefecture. He dropped out of Seiseiko Junior High School , and after graduating from the Kumamoto Army Local Cadet School and the Central Cadet School, he graduated from the Army Academy (22nd class) in May 1910. In December of the same year, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the infantry and assigned to the 48th Infantry Regiment. He graduated from the Army War College (34th class) in November 1922.

He served as a company commander in the 48th Infantry Regiment, attached to the General Staff, a member of the General Staff, a battalion commander in the 13th Infantry Regiment, a staff officer in the 9th Division, a staff officer in the Temporary Shanghai Expeditionary Army, and a staff officer in the Taiwan Army. In August 1934, he was promoted to army colonel and made commander of the 24th Infantry Regiment.

In August 1936, he became Chief of the General Affairs Section of the General Staff, and served in the Second Sino-Japanese War as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Shanghai Expeditionary Army. After serving at the General Staff, he was promoted to major general in March 1938 and appointed superintendent of the Tokyo Army Cadet School. After serving as chief of staff of the 3rd Army, he was promoted to lieutenant general in December 1940. In April 1941, he was appointed commander of the 29th Division and stationed in Manchuria until the outbreak of the Pacific War.

In October 1943, he was appointed commander of the 5th Army and continued to be involved in the defense of Manchuria. After serving at the General Staff, he was in Urawa as commander of the 36th Army, preparing for the battle on the Japanese mainland when the war ended. He was demobilized in November 1945.​
