Cross belong to the count Sergej Georgievitch Karinkovski /граф Сергей Георгиевич Каринковский, прап., 4-й гус. Мариупольский п., 4 ст. — ВП от 26.03.1916. Ф.409. Оп.1. п/с 109-191 (1917)/ who was awarded with 4th class on March 26, 1916 while serving as ensign in the 4th Hussars Mariupol regiment.
Sergej Georgievitch Karinkovski was born in Podolia, Kiev on 1 March 1897. On graduating from the Elisavetgrad Cavalry School in 1915, he joined the 4th Mariupol Hussar Regiment of the Empress Elisabeth of Russia. While crossing the River Daugava near the village of Berghof on 13 August 1915, during the summer's retreat to Latvia, it was thanks to the perseverance and heroism of Ensign Karinkovski, who managed to detain the advancing German infantry at the bridge with the fourth platoon of the 2nd squadron, that his regiment was saved. Almost the entire platoon was wiped out in the manoeuvre Karinkovski, who was assumed to have also been killed in action (but was in fact severely wounded and taken prisoner) was awarded the Order of St. George 4th Class posthumously. This was conferred on him on 26 March 1916, following an exchange of prisoners organised with Germany. Despite his invalidity (having lost his right leg), Karinkovski had since been promoted to the rank of cornet and continued to serve up until the Bolsheviks came to power. He fought in the White Russian Army, was evacuated to Serbia via Gallipoli and subsequently established himself as a doctor near Belgrade. Until his death in 1955, Count Sergej Georgievitch Karinkovski served as director of the hospital in Mladenovac, where, on 2 April 2014, a plaque was unveiled in his honour in the presence of the Russian ambassador.
