Ceremonial cord /Gireishō/ was established on November 1, 1940 by Imperical Edict No. 725 /昭和十五年十一月一日 勅令第七百二十五号/ as element of Kokumin-fuku /National Uniform/.
Exerpt from original Edict that was published in Official Gazette No. 4148 on November 2, 1940.
"Material: Made from ancient style four-strand purple string with a base attached to the main part.
Remarks
1. The main part of cord shall be hung from the button of the right chest pocket and the end of the cord shall be fixed by the second button of the tunic.
2. The family coat of arms [Monshō] is attached to the center of the main part and the size of the coat of arms shall be no larger than 2 centimeters in diameter."
材料 古代紫色の四打紐を以て製し主部に台座を附す
備考
一 主部を懸紐に依り右胸部物入の釦に懸け紐の末端を上衣の第二釦に懸け佩ぶるものとす
二 主部の中央に家の紋章を附することを得紋章の大さは最大経二糎以内とす
Interestingly according to the the first regulation approved by the Cabinet on May 5, 1940 cord supposed to be worn on the left side of the chest.
