Kiyoshi Furuya /古谷清; October 2 , 1878 - November 2 , 1945/ was born in Tokyo Prefecture, he was the eldest son of Hamayoshi Furuya. After graduating from Tokyo Prefectural Fourth Middle School (now Tokyo Metropolitan Toyama High School), he graduated from the Army Academy (10th class) in November 1898. In June of the following year, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in artillery and assigned to the 1st Field Artillery Regiment. In December 1909, he graduated from the Army War College (21st class).
He served as a battalion commander of the 15th Field Artillery Regiment, served as a consultant to the Chinese government, served as a battalion commander of the 19th Field Artillery Regiment, an instructor at the Army Field Artillery Shooting School, and from 1918 to 1919 he was military attaché in Russia. In July 1919, he was promoted to infantry colonel. In October of the same year, he traveled to Europe as a member of the General Staff, where he was involved in gathering information on the European theater of World War I. He later served as commander of the 2nd Field Heavy Artillery Regiment, chief of the Artillery Division of the Ministry of the Army's Military Affairs Bureau, and head of the education department at the Army Field Artillery School. In October 1923, he was promoted to major general.
In February 1924, he transferred to the aviation field as an attached officer of the Army Aviation Department, and served as Chief of the General Affairs Department of the Army Aviation Headquarters and Commander of the Tokorozawa Army Flying School. In August 1929, he was promoted to lieutenant general, and in June 1930, he was appointed Chief of the Aviation Headquarters. In August 1931, he was placed on standby and transferred to the reserve forces. He later served as a director of the Kokusui-kai.
