The Keijō Nippō was established under the instruction of the first Japanese Resident-General of Korea, Itō Hirobumi in 1906. The original primary mission was to promote and justify Japan’s interest on the peninsula. After Japanese annexation of Korea in 1910, it became the Governor-General of Korea’s organ paper. The Governor-General acquired its rival Korean-language newspaper the Daehan Maeil Shinbo, consolidated it into Keijō Nippōsha, and established the Maeil Shinbo in the same year. After that, Keijō Nippō’s target readership became Japanese residents in Korea. The Governor-General tightened its media control in the 1930s and consolidated the newspaper press in 1942 as part of its one paper, one province policy. The Keijō Nippō stopped publishing in December 1945.
