Vasily Davidovich Gabayev or Vasily Gabashvili (Russian: Василий Давидович Габаев или Василий Габашвили; Georgian: ვასილ გაბაშვილი; 1853 – 1933) was a Russian and Georgian military leader.
He was born on March 30 (April 11, new style), 1853. He received his general education at the Tiflis Classical Gymnasium.
He entered service on December 2, 1869 in the 77th Tenginsky Infantry Regiment of the 20th Infantry Division. On February 4, 1875, he graduated from the Tiflis Infantry Cadet School and was promoted to ensign.
Participant in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 . Second lieutenant from May 1, 1877. Awarded the Order of St. Stanislav, 3rd class with swords and bow. Lieutenant from August 25, 1878. Awarded the Order of St. Anne, 3rd class with swords and bow.
In 1880 he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir, 4th class with swords and bow. Staff captain from 17 February 1881. In 1883 he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav, 2nd class. Captain from 3 February 1888 .
From February 26, 1895, lieutenant colonel. From December 26, 1897, he was in the army infantry with the troops of the Caucasian Military District. In 1898, he was awarded the Order of St. Anna, 2nd class.
On February 12, 1901, for distinguished service, he was promoted to colonel, and on May 20, he was appointed commander of the 1st Caucasian Rifle Battalion of the 1st Caucasian Rifle Brigade. From March 26, 1904, he was commander of the 79th Kura Infantry Regiment. In 1906, he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir, 3rd class.
From February 19, 1908, he was the commander of the 1st Brigade of the Caucasian Grenadier Division. On November 28, 1908, he was promoted to major general and confirmed in his position. In 1911, he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav, 1st class.
In 1913 he was promoted to lieutenant general and discharged from service with uniform and pension. After the outbreak of the World War on September 3, 1914, he was returned to service with the rank of lieutenant general and appointed commander of the 3rd Caucasian Rifle Brigade. By the highest order of May 17, 1915, he was awarded the Order of St. George, 4th class. From July 5, 1915 to August 1916, he was commander of the Caucasian Grenadier Division.
From 1916 to 1917 he was the military commandant of Tiflis, and at the end of 1917 he was appointed commander of the newly created Georgian Army Corps. He retained the highest military post during the period of the Georgian Democratic Republic, but retired after the establishment of Soviet power in Georgia in 1921.
He died on March 17, 1933 in Tiflis.
