Between April 20 and August 11, 1914, the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Training Squadron - consisting of the armored cruisers Azuma (Adzuma) and Asama - embarked on a North American tour under the command of Rear-Admiral Kuroi Teijiro. The squadron visited multiple ports along the West Coast, arriving in the Puget Sound area in late June. They made highly celebrated diplomatic port calls to Tacoma and Seattle.
