This cross of excellent workmanship was awarded to Duke on September 11, 1849 by King Friedrich II of Prussia for his participation in the Battle of Eckernförde on April 5, 1849. Battle of Eckernförde was a Danish naval assault on Schleswig. The Danes were defeated and two of their ships were lost with the surviving crew being detained.
