Marked with a gold hallmark "72", partly readable St. Petersburg assay office year mark "18..", round mark "coat of arms of St. Petersburg /anchors/" on the eyelet and the maker's mark "ES" for Erik Strand/Эрик Штранд on the lower obverse ray under the enamel.
At the end of the Crimean War of 1853-1856, the Chapter of Orders /Kapitul/ experienced an acute shortage of order crosses and it was decided to commissioned orders from a non-Kapitul workshops and masters. This cross /made sometime around 1855-1856/ belongs to such orders.
