Orders of Saint Charles made by Albert Bacqueville, Paris

Order of Saint Charles /Ordre de Saint-Charles; Monegasque: U̍rdine de San Carlu/ is the highest of the Monegasque distinctions. Established by the Sovereign Ordinance of 15 March 1858 and modified three times: on 16 January 1863, 2 November 1953 and 23 December 1966. This order rewards merit and services to the State or Prince. The order has five classes: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight.

The order cross consists of a golden cross with four branches and eight points in white enamel bordered with red; in the centre of the cross is a medallion, bearing on one side, on red enamel, a double monogram C with the princely crown, bearing the legend Princeps et patria in gold on white enamel; on the other, a tapered shield of gules and argent, in red and white enamel, bearing the motto of the Principality, Deo juvante. The cross is surrounded by a crown of laurel and olive in green enamel and surmounted by the princely crown in gold. The ribbon is composed of three vertical bands of equal width, red on either side and white in the center, these colors being those of the Principality of Monaco.
