Karl Reinhold Schubert (1818-1880), originally from Wesenberg (Rakvere in present-day Estonia), became a master goldsmith in Saint Petersburg in 1844 and opened a jewelry business there that same year. After his death, his widow Sophie, née Heinrichsen (1817-1894), and their son Eduard Johann (1847-1912) continued to run the business.
