This Rising Sun order was privately commissioned by Paul Bartels sometime after 1908 (he was awarded in 1908). After his death, the order was kept by his famous son Hans Bartels (5 July 1910 – 31 July 1945) who was a Korvettenkapitän with the Kriegsmarine during World War II and recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. After the end of war Bartels was retained in British custody and was assigned to a Minenräumkommando (German Mine Sweeping Administration), where he was killed in an accident near Rendsburg on 31 July 1945. He kept this order in his skirt bag until his last day.
