Raised in the cadet school, he was promoted to ensign in 1837, to secondary lieutenant in 1838, to lieutenant in 1841, to staff captain in 1846 and to captain (captain) in 1848. Promoted to major in 1849, he was appointed commander of the 2nd Imperial Lithuanian Jägerregiment, with which he took part in the Russian campaign to pacify Hungary and Transylvania in 1849. Promoted to lieutenant colonel in the course of the campaign, Emperor Franz Joseph I (1830-1916, ruled since 1848) awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Leopold Order.

Before 1852 he was awarded the 3rd degree St. Anne's Order. In 1852 he took part in the fighting in the Caucasus as a battalion commander in the Tengisk Infantry Regiment, during which he was seriously wounded. During the Crimean War from 1853 to 1856 he took part in the defense of Sevastopol from October 17, 1854 to September 9, 1855, during which he was seriously wounded again on August 27, 1855. Promoted to colonel three days later and appointed commander of the Schluesselburg Jäger Regiment, he received the St. George's weapon "For Bravery" on April 9, 1856 for excellent courage in the defense of Sevastopol.

He took part in another campaign in the Caucasus before he was assigned to the page corps in 1859. In 1859 he received the St. George's Service Award for 20 years of service, and the St. Vladimir Order of the 4th class. In 1864 he received the Order of St. Vladimir 4th class for 25 years of service.
