Originally the Training Fleet (練習艦隊, Renshū Kantai) was a training unit of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Organized after the Russo-Japanese War, however, systematized in 1902 by the Training Detachment (練習枝隊, Renshū Shitai) in the Standing Fleet. On May 10, 1957, in response to the need for maritime training for newly commissioned officers and students of the Maritime Self-Defense Force, a training group consisting of two PF training squadrons and three LSSL training squadrons was formed. On June 12 , 1961, following a partial amendment to the Self-Defense Forces Act by Law No. 126, the name was changed to the Training Squadron /練習艦隊; れんしゅうかんたい/.
