History of Japanese Naval Academy Graduation Badges

Badge of First Type /Type 1891/

Established on June 6, 1891 by Article 8 of Naval Academy Ordinance. Badges were issued only to Kō-gō Gakusei/A [Class] Students/甲号学生 together with the graduation certificate. Between 1891 and 1897 there were only 33 such graduates (1897 graduates were issued with badges of 2nd type https://asiamedals.info/threads/naval-academy-graduation-badge-of-rear-admiral-oishi-shokichi.27098/). Badge was worn under the right breast.

Reverse of the badge inscribed 海軍大學校 - Naval Academy.
 
Badge of Second Type /Type 1897/

Established on September 30, 1897 by Ministry of Navy Notification No. 17 /海軍省告示第十七號勅/. Badge also got a new name (in previous regulation it was mentioned as 附與スヘキ記章ノ件 - Special Badge Attached to the Uniform). Now it was called 海軍大學校將校科甲種學生卒業者徽章 - Naval Academy Officer`s Course Class A Student Graduation Badge.

Regulation was renewed on May 24, 1911. Design of the badge was remained unchanged, exact dimensions of the badge were given and name of the badge was shortened to 海軍大學校甲種學生卒業者徽章 - Naval Academy Class A Student Graduation Badge.​

Badge was abolished on October 23, 1922. Between 1897 and 1922 there were only 295** A class Naval Academy graduates.

* in the assumption that all eight 1897 A class graduates were issued with badges of 2nd type
* in the assumption that no badges were issued to the twenty six 1922 graduates
