Great Japan Prison Association /大日本監獄協会/ was founded in 1888 by volunteers, including prison officials, criminal justice officials, and Diet members, who contributed membership fees to support the Meiji government's policy of improving the judicial and prison systems. The founding spirit and activities of the association have been passed down to its modern successor a public interest incorporated foundation Correctional Association /公益財団法人 矯正協会/, which is engaged in various business activities to promote the development and dissemination of academic knowledge on correctional issues, cooperate with the administration of correctional administration, and thereby contribute to the prevention of crime and delinquency.
