The Greater Japan Educational Association /Dai Nippon Educational Association/ was established in 1883. It was Japan's first nationwide private educational organization. It held annual conferences (since its formation), published the ``Dainippon Educational Association Magazine'' (from November 1899), published education-related books (from June 1898), organized academic lectures (since September 1899), and established the affiliated book library (opened in March 1899, predecessor of the current educational library) , etc. After 1888, a research institute was established and the Ministry of Education began to consult with it. In May 1887, association hosted a national gathering of educators, which attracted over 800 educators from all over Japan.
