Matsuki, Naosuke /松木直亮; November 5, 1876 - May 22, 1940/ was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture as the eldest son of Ichiro Matsuki. He graduated from the Military Academy (10th class) in November 1898 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in June of the following year. He served as a company commander in the 1st Infantry Regiment during the Russo-Japanese War and was wounded in action. After the end of war he returned to the Army War College which he had dropped out of due to the Russo-Japanese War and graduated from the Army War College (19th class) in November 1907 .
After serving as a member of the General Staff and aide to Military Counselor Maresuke Nogi, aide to the attaché at the German Embassy, an instructor at the Army Infantry School, a member of the Military Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of War, an instructor at the Army University, commander of the 78th Infantry Regiment and aide to the Ministry of War in May 1923 he was promoted to major general. He successively served as commander of the 1st Taiwan Garrison , attached to the Army Ordnance Headquarters (Secretary General of the Operational Materials Maintenance Council), and Director of the Maintenance Bureau of the Ministry of War. In December 1927 he was promoted to lieutenant general and served as commander of the 14th Division. In December 1933 he was promoted to general and was transferred to the reserve in January of the following year. Following the February 26 Incident in February 1937 he was ordered to serve as a judge at the Tokyo Army Court Martial.
