Group of General Antoine Crispulo Joseph Martinez (1806-1877). "A superb man" according to Canrobert, he began his career in the Spanish army, served in the Carlist army, then entered the service of France as a foreign officer in 1840, assigned as captain to the 2nd Foreign Legion regiment in Algeria, he quickly gained recognition for his bravery and energy. Naturalized French in 1851, he was appointed battalion commander in 1854 and distinguished himself in the Crimea. In front of Sevastopol, on the night of May 22 to 23, 1855 - one of the glorious nights - locked in a redoubt at the head of his battalion of the 2nd Foreigners, he resisted seven furious assaults.
