The Princely Hohenlohe House and Phoenix Order was the house order of the Hohenlohe noble family and was founded on December 29, 1757, by Prince Philipp Ernst zu Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst on his 94th birthday under the name House Order of the Golden Flame. It originally served as a bond of friendship for his children, their descendants, and closest relatives. The central medallion features the Latin motto "In Senio/In Old Age", which refers to the advanced age of the founder. In 1770 the Order was reorganised by Prince Carl Albrecht, and named the Order of the Phoenix. The new Order was to be awarded to Germans and foreigners of noble descent. In 1795 Prince Ludwig Leopold of Hohenlohe-Bartenstein gave the Order new statutes in which it was divided into two divisions, House Order of the Golden Flame and Order of the Phoenix, with the latter divided into two classes.
