Chinese Republican Orders awarded to Reginald Follett Codrington Hedgeland was born in Exeter in 1874. After graduating from Pembroke College, Oxford in 1897 he joined the Chinese Maritime Customs Service and was posted to Kiungchang. He subsequently served at Nanking, Tientsin, Lappa, Kowloon, Swatow and the port of Nanning, where he was in charge for six years. Appointed Deputy Commissioner in 1917 and Commissioner in 1921, he was placed in charge of Aigun, on the Amur river in Manchuria, in 1923. Fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese, he returned to Swatow to take charge before final postings in Canton and as Commissioner at Hankow. He retired in 1930.
