Sir James Leighton was appointed Court Physician to Tsar Alexander I in 1805, as well as becoming Physician General to the Imperial Russian Navy. He continued to serve under Nicholas I and the Tsarina, Alexandra Feodorovna. He retired to England in 1830 when he was created Knight Bachelor at the personal request of the Tsar.
