8th Air Regiment (Hiko 8 Rentai) was organized in 1925 in Pingtung, Taiwan/Formosa. Its was reorganized and renamed from 8th Air Regiment (Hiko 8 Rentai) to 8th Air Wing/Squadron (Hiko 8 Sentai) on August 31, 1938 with the 1st Chutai reconnaissance, 2nd Chutai fighter, 3rd Chutai bomber and 4th Chutai maintenance (as of 1936).​
