5th class Orders of Virtuti Militari made by Saint Petersburg Mint

On November 7, 1831 after the suppression of the Polish uprising of 1830–1831 Emperor Nicholas I ordered that officers and generals be given out “a badge of distinction belonging to the Kingdom of Poland for military merit” to officers and generals. 5th class crosses were awarded to low-ranking combatants, paramedics and barbers who participated in the pacification of the Polish uprising of 1830–1831. By Decree of July 25, 1834, non-combatant ranks also received the right to be awarded with 5th class cross (except church clerks, provosts and batmen). Submissions for awarding the insignia were accepted until January 1. Between 1831 and 1835 St. Petersburg Mint manufactured 100 000 5th class crosses.
