Karl Wilhelm Wolff, von Wolff since 1786 (February 16, 1785 in Berlin ; November 29 , 1873 in Frankfurt (Oder)) came from the first line of the von Wolff family, which was elevated to hereditary Prussian nobility on October 20, 1786. He was a son of the Privy Councilor and Lord of Haselberg, Frankenfelde and Rädickow Paul von Wolff (1744–1805) and his wife Maria, née Schmitz (1759–1840).

Wolff entered service as a Junker in the “von Rudorff” Hussar Regiment of the Prussian Army in January 1799 and was promoted to cornet in March 1803. Promoted to second lieutenant at the beginning of the Fourth Coalition War , Wolff took part in the battles near Criewitz and Lübeck and was placed inactive with the capitulation of Ratekau. After the Peace of Tilsit, he left the service on May 8, 1811 with the right to wear his uniform. In the run-up to the Wars of Liberation, he was reinstated in the army as a captain on June 1, 1813 Squadron commander in the 2nd Courland Landwehr Cavalry Regiment. During the war Wolff fought in the battles of Großbeeren, Dennewitz, Leipzig, Laon, Ligny and Belle Alliance. He was also at the battles of Wittstock and Meudan as well as the sieges of Wittenberg, Gorkum and Soissons. For Laon Wolff received the Iron Cross 2nd class and in 1814 the Order of Saint Vladimir 4th class.

On May 2, 1815 he was promoted to major and on May 8, 1816 he was assigned to the 3rd Hussar Regiment At the end of March 1823 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. On March 30, 1830 he was commissioned to lead the 12th Hussars Regiment and was appointed its commander on June 6, 1831. On March 30, 1832 he was promoted to colonel, was admitted to the Order of St. John as an honorary knight on September 15, 1838 and was awarded the 2nd class Order of Saint Anna on October 5, 1838. Simultaneously with promotion to Major General he was appointed commander of the 15th Cavalry Brigade in Cologne on March 30, 1839. For his achievements in troop leadership King Friedrich Wilhelm IV awarded him the 2nd class Order of the Red Eagle with Oak Leaves on September 12, 1842. Awarded the rank of lieutenant general Wolff received his farewell and pension on May 22, 1845.​
