4th class Saint George crosses of Lieutenant General Nikolai Nikolaevich Stogov

For almost hundred years these two crosses were in the hiding place. Currently both in the private collection.

Nikolai Nikolaevich Stogov /Николай Николаевич Стогов; 1873—1959/ graduated from the Nikolaev Cadet Corps, 2nd Military Konstantinovsky School. In 1900 he graduated from the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff in the first category.

From November 1900 he served as senior adjutant of the 17th Infantry Division and from May 1901 as chief officer for special assignments at the headquarters of the 6th Army Corps. From September 1904 to March 1909 - senior adjutant of the headquarters of the Warsaw district . In December 1908 he was promoted to colonel , and in May 1909 he was appointed head of the military history department in the department of the quartermaster general of the Main Directorate of the General Staff. Since July 14 , 1910 - the clerk of the Main Directorate of the General Staff.

He met World War I as the chief of staff of the 1st Finnish Rifle Brigade. In the autumn of 1914 he was appointed commander of the 3rd Finnish Rifle Regiment. April 15, 1915 was appointed quartermaster general of the headquarters of Brusilov's 8th Army.

He was awarded with order of St. George 4th class on June 14, 1915 "for being in the battle on March 27, 1915 at the Koziovskaya position when the Germans broke into mountain 992 and thus threatened the flank and rear of his position, personally under a strong rifle and machine-gun fire led his reserve to counteract the spread of the enemy's success and paralyzed the success of the Germans with his action/За то, что в бою 27 марта 1915 г., на Козиовской позиции, когда германцы ворвались на гору 992 и этим угрожали флангу и тылу его участка, лично под сильным ружейным и пулемётным огнём повёл свой резерв для противодействия распространению успеха противника и своим действием парализовал успех германцев".


On September 25, 1916 he was appointed chief of staff of the 8th Army. He was the closest assistant to Generals A. A. Brusilov and A. M. Kaledin.

After the February Revolution, he quickly went up the career ladder. April 2, 1917 became commander of the XVI Army Corps and April 29, 1917 promoted to lieutenant general. After the speech of General L. G. Kornilov on September 10, 1917, he replaced General S. L. Markov as Chief of Staff of the armies of the Southwestern Front. After the October Revolution for some time he served as commander-in-chief of the armies of the front.

In January 1918 he entered the Red Army. From May 8 to August 2, 1918 - Chief of the All-Russian Headquarters of the Red Army. The Cheka was arrested (October-November). Since November 25, 1918 - in the system of the Main Archive. Assistant manager of the 1st Moscow branch of the 3rd (military) section of the Main Archive (since February 1, 1919). He collaborated with the anti-Bolshevik underground organization "National Center", participated in the work of the underground Headquarters of the Volunteer Army of the Moscow Region until April 1919, was the commander-in-chief of the Volunteer Army of the Moscow Region.

In April 1919, the Cheka was arrested. He was held in the Butyrka prison and the Andronikov Monastery. In the autumn of 1919, he escaped from prison. After that, his wife was shot by the Reds in Moscow. She was captured along with the son of the general, ambushed by the Cheka, the fate of her son is unknown, most likely that he was also shot along with his mother. Together with another officer-fellow traveler, he crossed the front line and reached the Headquarters of the All-Russian Union of Youth in Taganrog. In the White Movement, Chief of Staff of the Kuban Army under General Shkuro, January-February 1920. Since May 1920 - the last commandant of Sevastopol in the Russian army General Wrangel; at the same time - the commander of the troops of the rear area. He organized the evacuation of the White troops from the Crimea.

After the evacuation, he lived for several years in Zemun (Yugoslavia), since 1924 - in Paris, where he worked at a factory. From 1928 - deputy chief, from July 6, 1930 - head of the military office of the ROVS (until 1934). Since September 1934 - Chairman of the District Board of the Society of Officers of the General Staff of the 1st Department of the Russian All-Military Union, since December 16 of the same year - Vice-Chairman of the Union of Knights of St. George, since 1934 - Chairman of the Society of Officers of the General Staff in Paris. Since 1948 - Deputy Chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Guards Association. Collaborated in the magazine " Hour ".

During the Second World War, he morally supported the Resistance Movement and the struggle of the USSR against the Nazi invaders, which he noted in a letter to Denikin dated November 2, 1944:

"Yes, we can all give thanks to the Lord God. The Russian land has not been put to shame, but on the contrary, it is rising higher and higher, and who knows whether what we only dreamed of will not come true right now: the unification of the Slavs and access to the free seas.

And we must do justice - the preparation for war, both in the moral sense and in the material sense, is simply amazing. It is not for nothing that the Soviet people now say: “Now we understand why we did not have enough for life - everything went to prepare for war"".

He died in the Russian home for the elderly in Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois and buried in the cemetery of Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois.​
