2nd class Saint Anna order (and other awards) awarded in 1828 to Dr. Wilhelm Friedrich Abendroth

Dr. Wilhelm Friedrich Abendroth was born on August 1, 1802, in Pirna (near Dresden). In 1827 he became the personal physician of the family of Russian General Leon Narischkin in Odessa, Russia. He then served as a military doctor during the Siege of Varna in the summer of 1828 during the Russo-Turkish War. For this he was awarded with the silver medal "For the Turkish War". Nicholas I bestowed 2nd class Saint Anna order upon Abendroth for personally giving medical aid to the emperor during a storm at sea while returning to Odessa following the Siege of Varna in 1828.

Marked with a St. Petersburg assay office year mark "182?" and under the enamel with "double-headed eagle" and "IP" for for Immanuel Pannasch.

Medal "For the Turkish War".

/The medal was awarded to everyone who took part in military operations against Turkey from 1828 to 1829. All generals, officers, lower ranks, both combatant and non-combatant, as well as militias were awarded. From December 10 (22), 1830, sailors who participated in battles began to be also awarded with this medal. According to a special imperial decree, nominations for this medal could continue until September 1, 1832./​

Abendroth remained in Odessa for another decade. In 1831 he married Mary Simpson, the daughter of a Scottish doctor serving in the imperial employ. At that time Abendroth was the chief physician of the nurse’s home at Odessa. He had the rank and title of Royal Court Counselor. For his service during an outbreak of the bubonic plague in Odessa in 1837 Abendroth was awarded with a gold medal on the Saint Alexander Nevsky order ribbon. In 1839 Abendroth left Odessa and returned to Dresden. He died on July 13, 1863.

/Medal was established on April 19, 1838 by decree of Nicholas I and was awarded to persons involved in the fight against the plague epidemic in Odessa in 1837. The medal had two versions - gold and silver. Gold medals were awarded to officers, doctors, medical officials and merchants. Silver medals were awarded to paramedics, police officers, clerks and other burghers. At the St. Petersburg Mint in July 1838, 344 gold /340 of which were issued and 4 unissued medals were subsequently melted down/ and 117 silver medals were minted./
