Jettons were commissioned by Empress Maria Feodorovna (1847-1928) and were worn on a chain. It has the form of an enamel regimental weathervane crowned with a double-headed eagle, consisting of two red and one white corner. The applied monogram "MF" on the front side of the token corresponds to the applied number "XXV" on the back. On March 31, 1906, the Empress purchased 80 such tokens at a price of 35 rubles per one. Subsequently, on February 18, 1908, an order for 113 tokens was paid for at 36 rubles per piece. And finally, one more "enamel cavalry guard token with a gold eagle and the monogram MF" was purchased at the same price on September 9, 1914. Thus, a total of 194 tokens were made.

From the nobility of Tver province, son of Lieutenant General Sergei Ivanovich Tolstoy (1838-1897), Orthodox faith. Educated in the Corps of Pages of His Imperial Majesty, completed the course with the 1st category. On 14 November 1887 he was enrolled as a page at the Imperial Court. On 31 October 1888 he was assigned to the Corps of Pages of His Imperial Majesty. On 31 August 1895 he was transferred to the junior special class of the corps. Active service is considered from 1 September 1895. On 1 September 1896 he was transferred to the senior special class of the corps. On December 5, 1896, he was promoted to Page of the Chamber of the Imperial Court. On August 1, 1897, he was attached to the Cavalry Guards Regiment of Her Majesty Empress Maria Feodorovna as an Estandard Junker, and on August 13, 1897, he was promoted to Cornet in this regiment. On December 6, 1901, he was promoted to Lieutenant with seniority from August 13, 1901, on December 6, 1905 - to Staff Captain with seniority from August 13, 1905, on July 22, 1911 - to Captain with seniority from August 13, 1909. For 7 months, he held the position of squadron commander. From 23 May 1912 he was at the disposal of Grand Duke Dmitry Pavlovich, remaining on the lists of the Cavalry Guards Regiment. Promoted to colonel with seniority on 6 December 1912. Participant in World War I 1914-1918. According to information as of March 1915, he was at the disposal of the commander of the Guards Corps. He was awarded the orders of St. Stanislaus, 3rd class (6 December 1907), St. Anna, 3rd class (6 December 1911), St. Stanislaus, 2nd class (6 April 1914), St. Vladimir, 3rd class (17 November 1916), St. Vladimir, 4th class (19 November 1916); he had a silver medal in memory of the coronation of Emperor Nicholas II. He was married to a native of St. Petersburg province, the daughter of an actual state councilor, Mistress Zinaida Sergeevna Bekhteeva, they have children: Natalia (born 17 July 1901) and Sergei (born 1 February 1904); the wife and children are Orthodox.
In 1908, after the death of his uncle A.S. Safonov, he inherited a significant fortune. After the revolution, he settled in Odessa, where he owned several houses. He died of pneumonia and was buried in the cemetery (later destroyed) of the Mikhailovsky Convent.
