François Gabriel Pittié was born in Nevers on January 4 , 1829
Appointed Second Lieutenant in the 21st RI in 1849, then Lieutenant in 1854. He served in the Crimea from 15/6/54 to 25/11/55 and was injured by a contusion in the right leg by a bomb on 19/4/55 in Sebastopol, then again from a shrapnel in the left foot on 8/9/55 during the assault on the city.
Appointed Captain in 1855, he returned from Crimea Knight of the Legion of Honor, decorated with the 5th class of the Medjidié and the Crimean medal. In Italy from 27/4 to 25/7/1859, he was seriously injured by a gunshot to the left shoulder at Solferino. He receives the Military Valor of Sardinia. Appointed Major of the 46th RI in 1866, he participated in the repression of the riots in Aubin (Aveyron). Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1869, he was promoted Battalion Commander of the 24th RI in 1870.
During Franco-Prussian War after retreat from Metz on 3/11 he joined the Army of the North. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and then Colonel, took part in the battles in the North at the head of the 68 RI and then of a brigade. Injured by a contusion in the right knee on 23/12/70 at Pont Noyelles. After the armistice he took part in the capture of Paris (capture of Montmartre) and was promoted to Commander of the Legion of Honor.
Passed to the 40 RI in 1871. Promoted to Colonel in 1874, he was appointed head of the 61 RI, then appointed as attaché to the President of the Republic in March 1879. Brigadier general in June 1879.
General of Division in April 1883, as Secretary General of the Cabinet of the President. Died in Paris in 1886 at age 57. A brilliant career was opening up before him.
