1926 Mikasa Preservation Ceremony Commemorative Plaque/大正十五年十一月十二日保存記念式記念章

In September 1923 Japan, as a signatory country of Washington Treaty, decided to decommission aged Mikasa. However the people's voice to keep the battleship Mikasa that contributed greatly to the victory in the Japanese- Russo War as a symbol of nation's pride to defend Japan's independence both at home and abroad. The preservation of Mikasa as a memorial ship adopted at a Cabinet meeting and the International Military Committee approved it.

Initially Mikasa was to bring out to Shibaura, Tokyo however, while mooring at Yokosuka harbor quay, Mikasa suffered some cracks on her bottom hull and was flooded by the Great Kanto Earthquake. So the plan changed in a hurry to settle Mikasa in the present place, Yokosuka. In June 1925, having completed the preservation work, Mikasa was towed into present place which was made by excavating the rock stage below by tug boats at high tide and fixed pointing the bow to the imperial palace.

On 12 November the lavish preservation ceremony was held with the presence of the Prince Regent (later Emperor Showa). The photo shows the appearance of preserved One of Three World-Renowned Historic Memorial Warships, Mikasa and the turret removed from the ship placed near the stern of the ship.​
