In April 1891 Shimazu Tadayoshi /島津忠義, May 22, 1840 – December 26, 1897/ ruler of the Satsuma Domain as its 12th and last daimyō until 1871.
Satsuma lands, member of the Japanese House of Peers welcomed Tsarevich (future Nicholas II) during the entry of the Russian squadron to the port of Kagoshima, the capital of the Satsuma domain. It was then that he received the insignias of the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky and the Order of the White Eagle. Naturally both orders were for Non-Christians. Tsarevich Nicholas himself handed them over to Shimazu Tadayoshi on behalf of Emperor Alexander III.
